New Director IDs

A Director Identification Number (Director ID) is a unique 15 digit identifier you will keep forever. It will help to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

If you want to become a director or are already one, you’ll need a director ID. When you need to apply depends on the date you become a director.

Director ID is now available online. To apply, directors must log into the ABRS website online using the MyGovID app. It is free to apply and available to directors within Australia and overseas.

Due dates to apply:

• Existing directors appointed before 31 October 2021 will have a deadline of 30 November 2022 to apply for a Director ID.
• New directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 will have 28 days after appointment to apply.
• New directors appointed from 5 April 2022 will be required to apply for their Director ID before appointment.

Penalties will apply for:

• Failure to apply within the stipulated time frame
• Conduct that undermines the new requirements

Applying for your Director ID

Unfortunately, a Tax, BAS or ASIC agent cannot apply on your behalf. The director must personally register for their director identification number. Therefore, we’ve created a couple of resources to assist with your application.
